How do we ensure progression and coverage across EYFS to Year 6?
You ensure progression and coverage across EYFS–Y6 by making sure three things are in place: a clear long-term plan, a sequenced progression model, and simple checks that it’s being taught as intended.
1. Start with a whole-school long-term plan
- Map out themes/units by year group across the year.
- Make sure every subject has protected space within the model (so foundation subjects don’t get squeezed).
- For EYFS, ensure the plan clearly shows how learning links to the EYFS framework and how it transitions into Year 1.
2. Use progression maps for each subject
For each subject, have a simple progression map that shows:
- Key knowledge pupils should build year on year
- Vocabulary progression
- Skills progression
- Any “non-negotiables” (e.g., core concepts that must be revisited)
This is where you avoid the classic “topic trap” (fun activities, but no clear progression).
3. Sequence learning within units
Within each unit/theme:
- Make sure lessons/activities are planned in a way that builds knowledge logically
- Use retrieval and revisit key concepts so learning sticks
- Ensure teachers know what prior learning pupils should already have (and what comes next)
4. Make it usable for teachers
Progression only works if it’s teachable:
- Keep planning formats consistent across year groups
- Provide clear “expected outcomes” by year group
- Build in guidance for adaptation (SEND/EAL, mixed-age classes, local context) without breaking the sequence
5. Check it lightly but regularly
You don’t need mountains of paperwork. A simple cycle works:
- Subject leader checks of plans/maps (coverage)
- Work looks focused on progression (are expectations rising year on year?)
- Pupil conversations about what they know/remember
- Quick review points each term: “What have we taught? What stuck? What needs revisiting?”
