How do you handle local curriculum requirements alongside UK expectations?

We handle both through curriculum mapping:

  • Each theme’s learning is mapped to National Curriculum objectives
  • Overlay local curriculum requirements (e.g. national language, local history, civics, religion, heritage)
  • Identify where requirements naturally align (many do: science enquiry, writing genres, geography skills)
  • Where they don’t align, plan local inserts (mini-units, additional outcomes) within the same theme so it still feels coherent

In practice, schools keep a consistent whole-school structure while making sure statutory local elements are explicitly planned and evidenced.
