Why Curriculum Conversations Matter at the End of the School Year

As another school year draws to a close, many school leaders find themselves reflecting on outcomes, reports, transition arrangements and plans for September. Amid all of this activity, there is one conversation that deserves particular attention: curriculum.

The end of the school year is one of the most valuable opportunities schools have to review what is working well and what could be improved. Unlike formal monitoring activities throughout the year, this is a moment when staff have experienced the full curriculum journey. They have seen how units unfolded, where children excelled, where misconceptions persisted, and which learning experiences truly captured pupils’ imagination.

In my experience, some of the most productive curriculum discussions happen at this time of year.

Too often, curriculum is reviewed only when inspection frameworks change or when new national guidance emerges. However, the strongest curricula are constantly evolving. They respond to the needs of pupils, reflect the strengths of staff, and adapt to the changing world around them.

The end of the year provides a natural opportunity to ask some important questions:

  • What did children remember most?
  • Which topics generated the greatest enthusiasm?
  • Where did pupils struggle?
  • Which learning experiences had the greatest impact?
  • What would we do differently next time?

These conversations often reveal far more than data alone.

I remember reviewing curriculum with staff following a number of STEM projects we had delivered. While attainment data was positive, the most valuable feedback came from teachers discussing the levels of engagement, collaboration and confidence they had seen from pupils. Children who had previously been reluctant learners became fully immersed in engineering challenges, science investigations and creative problem-solving activities. Those discussions helped shape future curriculum decisions because they highlighted what genuinely mattered to both pupils and staff.

This is also a valuable time to listen to teachers. Teachers spend every day bringing the curriculum to life. They know which resources worked well, where progression felt secure, and where additional support might be needed. They often have excellent ideas for improving learning experiences, strengthening local links, or introducing meaningful adaptations. When staff feel their voice contributes to curriculum development, ownership and confidence naturally increase.

Pupil voice matters too.

Children are often surprisingly insightful when discussing their learning. Ask them what they enjoyed, what challenged them, and what they still remember from earlier in the year. Their responses can provide powerful clues about which elements of the curriculum are having the greatest impact.

Importantly, curriculum conversations should not focus solely on adding more content. Sometimes the most valuable outcome is identifying what can be simplified, refined or taught differently. Effective curriculum is not measured by how much is covered, but by how much children understand and retain.

As schools continue to prepare for future curriculum developments and potential reforms, these reflective conversations become even more important. Curriculum should never be viewed as a finished product; it should remain a living framework that grows and develops alongside the children and communities it serves.

Before attention turns fully to September, there is real value in taking a moment to reflect.

The most powerful curriculum improvements often begin with a simple conversation about what has worked, what has not, and what we want children to experience next.

The end of the school year is the perfect time to start that conversation.

What schools say about Dimensions.

“As a primary pupil referral unit, creating genuine engagement is essential for our learners. We were looking for a curriculum that places children at the heart of everything and encourages them to immerse themselves in purposeful, meaningful activities. Dimensions has proved to be a strong fit because it enables our pupils to be active, curious learners rather than passive recipients of information. It brings learning to life in a way that motivates them and supports high-quality learning throughout. Plus, the children just love the curriculum!”
