How a Strong Curriculum Can Support Staff Confidence

One of the most overlooked aspects of curriculum design is its impact on staff confidence. 

We rightly spend a great deal of time discussing outcomes for pupils, but those outcomes are closely linked to how supported, knowledgeable and empowered teachers feel themselves. A strong curriculum does far more than organise content. It provides clarity, direction and the confidence for teachers to deliver learning with purpose and enthusiasm. 

During my time as an Assistant Headteacher, I saw this first-hand while helping lead improvements across Key Stage 2 following a previous Ofsted judgement of Requires Improvement. Reading outcomes were below standard, and there was a need to strengthen pupils’ inference skills and their familiarity with subject and genre-specific language. Alongside this, I worked closely with staff to develop more meaningful cross-curricular links, particularly across STEM subjects, so that learning became more connected and purposeful for children. 

One of the approaches that had the greatest impact was encouraging the practical application of mathematics through science and wider STEM learning. Teachers reinforced concepts across different subjects so that children could see knowledge being used in meaningful contexts rather than existing in isolation. Over time, science outcomes rose exponentially alongside significant improvements in reading and mathematics across KS2. 

However, the most important factor behind that improvement was not a scheme or a set of resources. It was the collective strength of the staff team. 

To help build confidence across the trust, I established a working group made up of STE(A)M leads from each school. I led the group, but ownership was shared across the team. Together, we co-planned ideas, shared good practice, explored competitions and identified high-quality resources that teachers could realistically use in their classrooms. Staff were encouraged to contribute based on their own strengths and interests. Some were confident with engineering projects, others with science investigations, computing or mathematics. Teachers supported one another openly, helping colleagues build confidence in areas they found more challenging. That collaborative culture made a huge difference. 

When teachers work in isolation, confidence can remain limited to the subjects or approaches they already feel comfortable teaching. Over time, this can unintentionally narrow classroom experiences for children as well. However, when staff work together professionally, test ideas collectively and feel supported to try something new, confidence grows much more quickly. This is one of the reasons curriculum design matters so much. 

A strong curriculum should provide secure content knowledge, clear progression and consistency across year groups. Teachers need to understand what pupils should learn and how knowledge builds over time. That clarity is essential, particularly for less experienced staff or those leading unfamiliar subjects. At the same time, curriculum should remain flexible and adaptable to the needs of individual schools and communities. 

One of the challenges increasingly discussed across education is the rise of overly rigid curriculum models centred around endless PowerPoints, worksheets and scripted lessons. While these approaches can initially reduce planning time, they can sometimes limit professional autonomy and creativity if followed too rigidly. Teaching becomes focused on delivery rather than thoughtful adaptation, collaboration and responsiveness to the children in front of us. The strongest curriculum approaches support teachers rather than replace them. 

In my experience, staff confidence grows most when curriculum acts as a strong foundation rather than a straitjacket. Teachers need opportunities to adapt learning, build on children’s interests and work collaboratively with colleagues. Professional development should be woven naturally into curriculum development so that staff continue building subject knowledge and pedagogical confidence over time. 

External support also plays an important role here. Where schools lack subject specialists internally, there is enormous value in working with local hubs, trusts, STEM organisations, universities and external agencies. Throughout my career, whether leading Science Learning Partnerships, delivering CPD nationally or working alongside external organisations, I have seen how powerful these partnerships can be in raising staff confidence and broadening what schools feel able to offer. 

Ultimately, schools need curricula that reflect the collective strengths of their staff team and genuinely mean something to their children and community. When teachers begin to see pupils responding enthusiastically, applying knowledge confidently and talking positively about their learning, staff confidence naturally grows alongside it.
