Small Curriculum Changes That Can Make a Big Difference in September

As September approaches, many school leaders are reviewing plans for the new academic year. While major curriculum redesigns occasionally have their place, some of the most effective improvements I have seen throughout my career have come from relatively small changes implemented consistently over time.

Curriculum development does not always require a complete rewrite. Sometimes a few carefully considered adjustments can have a significant impact on pupil engagement, staff confidence and learning outcomes.

Create More Opportunities for Retrieval

One of the simplest changes schools can make is to build in more opportunities for pupils to revisit prior learning.

This does not need to involve lengthy assessments or additional workload. Short discussions, quizzes, retrieval questions and regular references to previous learning can help pupils strengthen their understanding and make connections across topics. Children are far more likely to remember knowledge when they encounter it repeatedly in meaningful contexts.

Strengthen Classroom Discussion

Many schools are increasingly recognising the importance of oracy across the curriculum.

Small changes such as introducing discussion routines, encouraging pupils to explain their reasoning, or providing opportunities for debate can have a significant impact on confidence, vocabulary and understanding. Some of the richest learning often emerges through conversation rather than written work alone.

Make Learning More Locally Relevant

Curriculum becomes more meaningful when children can see connections to their own lives and communities.

Schools do not need to redesign entire units to achieve this. Sometimes introducing local examples, local history, local geography or local role models can help make learning feel more relevant and memorable. Children are often more engaged when they understand how learning connects to the world around them.

Build in More Opportunities for Application

One challenge many schools face is ensuring that children have opportunities to use what they have learned, rather than simply remember it.

Small curriculum adjustments can create opportunities for pupils to investigate, create, solve problems or present their learning. Whether through practical science, design challenges, debates or creative projects, application often helps knowledge become more secure.

Review Curriculum Through the Eyes of Staff

Teachers are often best placed to identify where the curriculum could be strengthened.

Before September, consider asking staff:

  • Which units worked particularly well?
  • Which resources were most effective?
  • Where did pupils struggle?
  • What would make delivery easier next year?

Some of the most valuable curriculum improvements come directly from classroom experience.

Simplify Where Possible

In my experience, curriculum can sometimes become overcrowded.

Rather than continually adding new content, schools should also consider what can be streamlined. Removing unnecessary complexity often creates more time for deeper learning, discussion and exploration.

Strengthen Cross-Curricular Connections

The real world does not divide itself neatly into subjects, and neither do children’s experiences.

Small opportunities to connect learning across subjects can make the curriculum feel more coherent. Science can support writing. History can inspire art. Mathematics can be applied through design technology. These connections often help pupils understand the purpose behind their learning.

Focus on What Matters Most

Perhaps the most important curriculum change any school can make is to regularly revisit its core purpose.

  • What do we want children to know?
  • What do we want them to remember?
  • What experiences do we want them to have?

When curriculum decisions are guided by these questions, improvements become easier to identify and priorities become clearer.

Looking Ahead

September often brings a sense of possibility. While large-scale curriculum reform can feel daunting, meaningful improvement does not always require dramatic change.

Sometimes the most powerful developments come from small, thoughtful adjustments that help children engage more deeply, support teachers more effectively and strengthen learning over time.

After all, successful curriculum development is rarely about doing more. Often, it is about doing the right things a little better.

What schools say about Dimensions.

“As a primary pupil referral unit, creating genuine engagement is essential for our learners. We were looking for a curriculum that places children at the heart of everything and encourages them to immerse themselves in purposeful, meaningful activities. Dimensions has proved to be a strong fit because it enables our pupils to be active, curious learners rather than passive recipients of information. It brings learning to life in a way that motivates them and supports high-quality learning throughout. Plus, the children just love the curriculum!”
