Music Teaching is Hard

Music teaching is hard… isn’t it?

When was the last time you taught music? Does the thought of leading a music lesson fill you with fear or flood you with cheer?

For many primary teachers, the words “music lesson” can spark a mixture of excitement and anxiety. It’s no secret that music teaching, especially for us non-specialists, can feel daunting. There’s the pressure of curriculum coverage, the fear of “getting it wrong,” and the ever-present challenge of engaging a class with varying musical confidence. Is music teaching really as hard as it seems, though?

Let’s be honest – music is different. Unlike maths or literacy, it’s less about right or wrong answers and more about creativity, expression, and experience. For teachers who haven’t had much musical training, that open-endedness can feel overwhelming. Questions like “What if I can’t sing?” or “What if I don’t play an instrument?” are common, and many teachers worry they’re not equipped to deliver meaningful music lessons.

But here’s the good news: you don’t have to be a concert pianist or a vocal virtuoso to teach music well. What matters most is creating a space in the timetable where children feel safe to explore, experiment, and enjoy music. Those spontaneous, joyful moments, where a lesson takes an unexpected turn or pupils surprise you with their creativity, are often the ones that stick with both teachers and pupils. They show that musical learning isn’t just about following a plan or ticking boxes; it’s about being present, flexible, and willing to explore together.

We understand these challenges because we’ve been there too. That’s why our Hullabaloo! Music Curriculum is designed specifically for non-specialist teachers. We believe every teacher can deliver engaging, effective music lessons with the right support. Our structured lesson plans, clear guidance, and ready-to-use resources mean you don’t have to spend hours searching for ideas or second-guessing your approach.

We also know that music is about more than just playing instruments or reading notes. It’s about building confidence, encouraging collaboration, and developing a lifelong love of learning. Hullabaloo! lessons are packed with creative activities, from body percussion and singing games to composing simple melodies and exploring music from around the world. The focus is always on participation, not perfection.

Of course, there are challenges along the way. Classroom management, time constraints, and limited resources can all make music teaching feel tough at times. But with evidence-based practices like interleaving concepts and simple assessment tools, Hullabaloo! helps make progress visible – for both pupils and teachers. And when you see a child’s face light up as they master a new rhythm or perform for their classmates, it’s clear that the effort is worth it.

So, is music teaching hard? Sometimes, yes. But with the right support, it’s also incredibly rewarding. Every teacher has the potential to inspire a love of music in their pupils, regardless of their own musical background. With Hullabaloo!, you’re never alone on that journey. We’re here to make music teaching simple, enjoyable, and accessible for everyone, one lesson at a time.
