How does a thematic curriculum support SEND pupils?

·

A well-planned thematic curriculum supports SEND pupils because it creates predictable structures, meaningful context, and multiple ways in.

  • Context reduces cognitive load: When learning is anchored in a familiar theme, pupils spend less energy working out “what is this about?” and more on making links with prior learning.
  • Repetition with variety: Key vocabulary, concepts and routines recur across subjects within a thematic approach (talk, writing, art, science), giving SEND pupils more chances to rehearse and secure learning.
  • Multi-sensory access: Themes naturally lend themselves to practical tasks, visuals, drama, artefacts, photos, video and real experiences — supporting pupils with processing, language, memory and attention needs.
  • Clear steps and outcomes: A thematic plan makes it easier to break learning into small, achievable steps (success criteria, models, WAGOLLs, checklists).
  • Belonging and engagement: Themes can be chosen for relevance and interest, which increases motivation — often the biggest barrier for some SEND learners.
