How do you challenge high attainers without extra workload?
Challenge without extra workload by planning depth, not more — use the same task, but promote higher-level thinking.
Low-prep ways to build stretch
- Better questions, not extra pages: “Which is most effective and why?”, “What would happen if…?”, “Argue both sides.”
- Choice of outcome: same success criteria, but pupils choose format (speech, report, debate, explanation, persuasive letter).
- Tighter constraints: word limits, specific audience, specific tone, include counterargument, use evidence.
- Greater independence: fewer scaffolds, more responsibility for structure, vocabulary choices, and editing.
- ‘Expert’ roles: pupils lead a mini-teach-back, create a model, or design success criteria from examples.
- Real purpose: publish, present to another class, write for a genuine audience — these approaches raise the bar naturally.
