Looking Ahead: Curriculum Priorities for the New Academic Year

As one academic year draws to a close, those of us in school leadership find our minds naturally wandering towards the next. The summer break offers a rare, quiet window to step back, take a breath, and reflect on what worked, what felt a bit cluttered, and how we want to reset before the doors open again in September.

While every school has its own unique community and context, there are a few core curriculum themes that many of us are wrestling with as we look ahead. At Dimensions Curriculum, we’ve been reflecting on these same priorities, thinking about how we can make the return to school feel less like a sprint and more like a meaningful journey.

Here are the key areas on our minds for the upcoming year, along with some personal reflections on how we can approach them together.

1. Finding the Balance: Ambition Without Overload

Over the last few years, primary schools have done incredible work tightening curriculum progression and making sure pupils build solid, sequential knowledge. It’s been a massive effort, and teachers deserve immense credit. But recently, a lot of school leaders have shared the same feeling with us: our curriculums are packed to the brim.

An ambitious curriculum isn’t about trying to teach every single fact under the sun. The real challenge for us this year is identifying what truly matters, and giving pupils the time to digest and understand it deeply.

A quick reflection: Rather than asking what we can add to our plans this summer, it might be more powerful to ask what we can streamline to create space for genuine curiosity, discussion, and creativity.

2. Letting Children Find Their Voices (Oracy)

Oracy has moved from an educational trend to a fundamental priority, and for good reason. High-quality classroom talk is the bridge that helps children build vocabulary, improve reading comprehension, and develop self-confidence.

Whether it’s through a structured debate, collaborative problem-solving, or simply sharing a thought during circle time, children need regular opportunities to speak, listen, and articulate their ideas.

When we designed our Learning Means the World framework, we chose Communication as one of our core pillars (or “World Issues”). We believe that learning to express oneself, and respect the voices of others, is just as vital as any academic subject.

Strong spoken language doesn’t just improve English lessons; it unlocks understanding in science, history, and every other subject on the timetable.

3. Making Learning Feel Real

We’ve all seen that spark in a child’s eyes when they realise what they’re learning connects to their life outside the school gates. Children engage on a completely different level when they see the purpose behind a lesson.

Lately, we’ve loved seeing schools find creative ways to tie their curriculums to local history, local communities, and real-world global issues. We try to mirror this in our own curriculum themes, like Conservation and Culture, helping children explore big, contemporary questions through a lens that makes sense to them.

When learning feels relevant, it sticks.

4. Moving From “Knowing” to “Doing”

The focus on a “knowledge-rich” curriculum has undoubtedly raised academic expectations. But knowledge shouldn’t just be memorised to pass a quiz; it needs to be lived. The next step for many of us is striking a healthy balance between teaching essential facts and giving children the space to apply them.

  • Practical science investigations allow children to test their ideas firsthand.
  • Creative projects and engineering challenges bring theoretical concepts to life.
  • Performances and debates turn quiet classrooms into active spaces of understanding.

It’s about helping children transition from simply remembering information to actively using it to solve problems.

5. Supporting and Trusting Our Teachers

At the end of the day, a curriculum is just a document until a teacher brings it to life in the classroom. As we refine our plans for September, we have to keep teachers’ wellbeing and confidence at the centre of the conversation.

Teachers need clarity and good resources so they aren’t spending their Sundays planning from scratch, but they also need the professional freedom to adapt lessons, share their own passions, and respond to the unique needs of the children sitting in front of them.

When we support teachers with straightforward, intuitive planning tools, we aren’t just saving them time; we’re giving them back the energy to do what they do best: inspire.

Looking Forward

When we strip away the paperwork, the core purpose of what we do remains beautifully simple: we want to help children understand their world, feel confident in who they are, and develop lifelong curiosity.

As you head into the summer and begin to look towards September, we hope you get some well-deserved rest. And if you ever want to chat about how to make your curriculum feel lighter, more connected, or more meaningful, we’re always here for a friendly, no-pressure cup of tea and a chat.

Have a wonderful break, and here’s to a brilliant year ahead!
